Catholicism was designed as a *state* religion. It's had some major setbacks during the past 400 years, but even now it naturally sees the State's role as doing what it deems moral. Take from the rich, give 40% to the poor after reasonable expenses.
Many protestants have a different view. According to them, Jesus never said to use government power to take from others and give to the poor.
